For tourists who are history inclined, the National Museum of Ireland is the perfect destination. The museum is divided into three categories: Archaeological, Decorative Arts and History and Natural History. Each division has history attractions of their own. They each have their unique tourist appeal.

The Archaeological Division

The Archaeological division of the National Museum of Ireland can be found on Kildare Street. It gives the visitors a feel of the historical Dublin. The museum was opened in 1890. It displays several archaeological collections dating as old as 7000 BC. Its collection includes Celtic and Medieval Arts, prehistoric gold artefacts, Kingship and Sacrifice Exhibition and many more.

The visiting schedule of the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology is from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm. This is the same schedule for the rest of the museum divisions.

Decorative Arts And History Division

The museum was once the Collins Barracks. The latter was renovated and refurbished to become the home of Ireland’s economic, social, political, and military museum. The Decorative Arts and History Division house several artefacts that depict the different aspects of Ireland’s history.

On display in the museum are silver, ceramic and glassware pieces, weapons, furniture and even Irish costumes. There is also the Military History exhibition wherein some of the military artefacts, original letters, and replicas are on display. The exhibit also shows how the wars have affected the lives of the Irish people.

Natural History Division

The Natural History division houses about two million species. Most of the ones on display are insects. The museum was opened in 1857 in Merrion Street. It also displays wildlife species from Ireland and some parts of the world. Some of them are already extinct species.

In this museum, visitors will be awed at the wonders of the natural world. There are species which you think don’t exist but they do. The displays are enough to educate and amuse the visitors. After a visit to the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History Division, you will be able to appreciate more the complexity and beauty of the natural world.

The three divisions of the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology, Decorative Arts and History, and Natural History all proves, once and for all, how rich and colourful Ireland’s history and culture are. They serve as the connection of Ireland’s past to present.
