Word Count: 377 The majority of media jobs are available in major cities. In the UK the obvious centre of activity for radio, newspaper and television jobs is London and its surrounding areas. Those interested in careers in the media should seriously consider whether they can deal with the upheaval and cost associated with moving to a city where the price of rent and cost of living may be potentially higher than what they are used to. Because of regional television there are media opportunities in the UK’s larger cities but the vast majority of jobs are still located in the greater London area.
The exception to this is the video game industry. Which is unusual in that it is not centred around any particular city or region, there are jobs available in the UK from towns as diverse as Brighton and Dundee and it is not unusual to find video game companies based in relatively small towns and villages, for example Rare Ltd., a subsidiary of Microsoft and one of the most profitable games companies in the world operates out of a small village in Leicestershire.
A Sound Mixer is responsible for ensuring dialogue and other on-set sounds are recorded correctly during the filming of a television, film or video production. A sound mixer often brings his own equipment and support staff with him when hired by a studio. Their job is to arrange for the placement of microphones throughout the shooting location to ensure that sound is recorded properly. A sound mixer should immediately let a director know if a scene needs to be re-recorded due to inaudible dialogue or any other problems.
A Floor Manager works on film or television productions that take place in a studio. A floor manager is responsible for communicating the wishes of the director to the crew-members working on set and will also be expected to alert the director to any problems that may arise during filming. The floor manager is also expected to ensure that everybody is in the correct position prior to and during filming and will usually be tasked with giving the studio audience a brief talk on what they can and cannot do during filming.
